Deer and Pronghorn of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
Ancient Hoofed Mammals of Southern California
Deer and pronghorn have been important members of North American ecosystems for millions of years. Fossils preserved in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park document an impressive diversity of these hoofed mammals, recording their evolution as southern California changed from river valleys and woodlands into the desert landscape of today.
The fossil deposits of Anza-Borrego preserve several extinct pronghorns as well as early members of the deer family, providing valuable evidence of changing climates, vegetation, and mammalian communities during the Pliocene and Pleistocene.
Deer and Pronghorn in Ancient Anza-BorregoDuring the Pliocene and Pleistocene, herds of browsing and grazing mammals roamed the floodplains and open grasslands of ancient Anza-Borrego. Deer occupied woodlands and riparian habitats, while pronghorn were adapted for life on open plains where speed provided protection from large predators such as saber-toothed cats, dire wolves, and short-faced bears.
As climates became cooler and drier, these animals adapted to changing environments, and many of the extinct species eventually disappeared, leaving only a few surviving relatives today.
Pronghorn — North America's Native Speedsters
Pronghorn are among North America's most distinctive mammals and belong to their own family, Antilocapridae. Although often called antelope, they are unrelated to the true antelopes of Africa and Asia.
Anza-Borrego preserves one of the richest fossil records of extinct pronghorns in California, including several genera that differed greatly from the living pronghorn (Antilocapra americana). Some possessed multiple pairs of horn cores, giving them an appearance unlike any living mammal.
Among the remarkable fossil genera recovered from the Park are Capromeryx, Stockoceros, and Tetrameryx, each representing different stages in pronghorn evolution.
Deer Through Time
The deer family (Cervidae) is represented in Anza-Borrego primarily by species of Odocoileus, the genus that includes today's mule deer and white-tailed deer.
Fossil deer demonstrate the long history of this successful group in western North America. Their remains indicate that river corridors, woodlands, and brushlands provided favorable habitats throughout much of the Park's ancient history.
Although less diverse than the pronghorns, fossil deer help document the development of modern western mammal communities.
