Giant Tortoises of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
Ancient Giants of California's Desert
Today, visitors to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park may encounter the desert tortoise, one of the most iconic reptiles of the American Southwest. Millions of years ago, however, the region was home to a much larger relative: the giant tortoise Hesperotestudo.
Fossils from Anza-Borrego reveal that tortoises and turtles were an important part of the region's prehistoric ecosystems. At least five species of tortoises and turtles have been identified from Pliocene and Pleistocene deposits within the park. Together, these fossils provide valuable evidence that the climate of southern California was once much wetter and more temperate than it is today.
The Giant Tortoise Hesperotestudo
The most spectacular tortoise fossil found in Anza-Borrego belongs to Hesperotestudo, an extinct giant tortoise that roamed North America during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. Unlike the smaller desert tortoises that inhabit the Southwest today, Hesperotestudo was a large terrestrial herbivore comparable in size to the giant tortoises now found only on isolated islands such as the Galápagos.
The presence of giant tortoise fossils in Anza-Borrego indicates that southern California once supported landscapes very different from the modern desert. Fossil evidence suggests a climate with warmer winters, cooler summers, greater precipitation, and permanent sources of fresh water. Rivers, lakes, and marshes provided suitable habitat not only for giant tortoises but also for a diverse assemblage of freshwater turtles and other reptiles.
Freshwater Turtles
While the giant tortoise Hesperotestudo was the largest reptile to inhabit ancient Anza-Borrego, it shared its environment with several species of freshwater turtles. Fossils of the western pond turtle (Actinemys marmorata), Sonoran mud turtle (Kinosternon sonoriense), and pond slider (Trachemys scripta) demonstrate that permanent ponds, marshes, and slow-moving streams were once common across the region.
These aquatic turtles occupied habitats very different from the arid desert seen today. Their presence, together with giant tortoises, provides compelling evidence that southern California experienced a warmer, wetter climate with abundant freshwater and lush vegetation during much of the Pliocene and early Pleistocene. The exceptionally preserved pond turtle fossils in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Paleontology Collection offer a remarkable glimpse into these vanished ecosystems and are among the finest reptile specimens recovered from the park.
Together, these fossils document millions of years of environmental change within the Salton Trough and Colorado Desert region.
